Cond. in Tokyo 1937–41. Settled in USA 1946. Cond., NY City Opera 1948–56 (dir. from 1952); mus. dir. Cologne Opera 1958–61. Returned to USA 1961, conducting at NY Met 1961–8, and S. Francisco Opera.
