(b New York, 16 Mar. 1912; d New York, 1 May 1969)
US lighting designer. A pioneer in the techniques of theatre lighting, she worked with Ballet Society and New York City Ballet (1946–57), the Martha Graham Dance Company (1958–65), and Robbins's Ballets: USA (1959–60). Her lighting designs had a choreographic quality, not only creating the impression of sculptural depth but also responding expressively to music. Robbins dedicated Dances at a Gathering to her memory.
