Italian architect and military engineer. His greatest work was the replanning of San Martino al Cimino near Viterbo (1648–54), a remarkable early instance of comprehensive order and system being imposed on an urban fabric. He fortified the Janiculum, Rome, for Pope Urban VIII (1623–44), building the Porta di San Pancrazio and the Porta Portese in Trastévere (both 1643). He was responsible for the Acqua Acetosa, Rome (1661).
