John Rotherham was born at Haydon Bridge, Northumberland on 22 June 1725 and died on a visit to Bamburgh Castle on 16 July 1789. He was educated at his father's school and at Queen's College, Oxford, graduating BA in 1749. He was then assistant at Codrington College in Barbados 1751–7 and was awarded his MA, in 1753, by special decree. On his return to London he became curate of Tottenham, Middlesex, the first of several posts. Between 1760 and 1767 he was a Fellow of University College, Oxford.
