Quick Reference

Mystical teacher and Hasidic master (1894–1944). Roth was born in Ungvar, Hungary. He studied the Talmud under Rabbi Isaiah Silverstein and Moses Forhand and came under the influence of various Hasidic masters, especially Rabbi Issachar Dov of Belz and Rabbi Zevi Elimelech of Blazowa. The latter urged Roth to become a Hasidic master himself. A group of young followers gathered around Roth in the town of Beregszasz (Beregovo) and towards the end of his life a similar group was formed around him in Jerusalem. This was a departure in Hasidism from the principle of hereditary succession. When Roth died the principle was restablished. He was succeeded by his son and son-in-law who were rival candidates for the succession: each inherited his own group of Roth's Hasidim.
