The 1st Regiment of US Cavalry Volunteers. They were largely recruited by Colonel Leonard Wood and Lieutenant-Colonel Theodore Roosevelt for service in the Spanish–American War of 1898. Comprising rangers, cowboys, Native Americans, and college students, their most notable exploit was the successful charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba, on foot as their horses had been left behind in Florida.
