Quick Reference

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, a volunteer force of officers and men raised for service in the Royal Navy in time of war or emergency, colloquially known as the ‘wavy navy’ after the wavy gold braid worn on the sleeves of reserve officers to differentiate them from officers of the regular navy. The RNVR differed from the RNR in that its members were not recruited from the merchant marine. In 1956 the RNVR was absorbed into the RNR to form a single reserve force.
