Italian-born painter who settled in Australia in 1897 and ran an art school in Sydney from 1898 to 1941. He also taught for many years at the Royal Art Society School, Sydney. Rubbo admired the work of the Post-Impressionists and his teaching helped to promote an advanced style based on their work. His pupils included three of the pioneers of modernism in Australia—Roy de Maistre, Grace Cossington Smith, and Roland Wakelin. Wakelin wrote of him: ‘Rubbo, with his virile personality and tremendous enthusiasm, was an inspiration to us all.’
