Quick Reference

The ‘leader of the synagogue’ (NRSV, Luke 8: 41) was an official appointed by the elders to look after the building, its contents, and its arrangements for worship. He was probably not the same person as the ‘attendant’ of Luke 4: 20, but in Luke 13: 14 it is the ruler who was outraged about the undignified disturbance caused when Jesus healed a crippled woman on a Sabbath. Sometimes there were several persons responsible for the worship (Acts 13: 15).
