Rye joined the British Museum library in 1838 as a transcriber, and became part of its permanent staff in 1844, receiving and cataloguing Grenville’s valuable bequest. He was responsible for organizing the reference books in the Round Reading Room, which opened in 1857, when he became assistant keeper, eventually succeeding as keeper in 1869 and retiring in 1875. He wrote on various antiquarian topics.
