1. A soluble fragment of meromyosin.
2. A ribosomal protein, S1, that is involved in initiation of translation in E. coli.
3. S1 nuclease (EC 188.8.131.52, ~300 aa) is a fungal nuclease that degrades single-stranded nucleic acids and is preferentially active against DNA. Used experimentally to analyse the structure of DNA:RNA hybrids (S1 nuclease mapping, Berk–Sharp technique), and to remove single-stranded extensions from DNA to produce blunt ends (see restriction endonucleases).
