Quick Reference

An Egyptian political party, founded in 1937 as an offshoot of the Wafd Party. Led by Ahmad Mahir (b. 1885, d. 1945), its members claimed that the Wafd had betrayed the principles of its founder Saghlul Sa'd. It was part of the government in 1938–9, and led an anti-Wafdist coalition, 1944–9. It represented the upper and middle classes of Egyptian society, but disappeared after the fall of the monarchy.
