French Protestant theologian. He propagated the theories of F. D. E. Schleiermacher and A. Ritschl in France, applied the methods of historical criticism to the NT, and, especially by his interpretation of Christian dogma as the symbolism of religious feelings, he exercised a profound influence not only on French Protestantism but also in Catholic theological circles, thus helping to prepare for the Modernist movement.
