Eleventh-century founder of a branch of Ismaili Shiis known as Nizaris or Assassins. Initially worked as an Ismaili missionary. Established base of command in the mountain fortress of Alamut in 1090. Became the de facto leader of the new order, although he did not assume the title of imam. The group engaged in assassination of political and cultural leaders to advance the Ismaili revolution.
