1 (‘word’, ‘sound’, ‘speech’, ‘language’) A term that may signify both conventional speech or language, and the eternal, primeval sound (synonymous with oṃ.), which, according to some thinkers, underlies all reality. See also śabda-brahman.

2 (śabda-pramāṇa) (‘authoritative verbal testimony’) A means of valid knowledge (pramāṇa) recognized by the six schools of philosophy (darśanas).
