Canadian‐born novelist, resident in London. Though he began his career writing award‐winning science fiction, Ryman moved towards slightly more realistic territory with Was (1992), a novel about Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. 253 (1996) was published initially on the Internet and later in a very successful ‘print remix’. Set on London Underground's Bakerloo line between Embankment and Elephant and Castle on a particular day in 1995, it consists of character sketches (each 253 words long) of the 253 passengers there would be on a such a train if every seat were taken. Later novels include Air (2004) and The King's Last Song (2006) set in Cambodia.
