Grand vizier; title given to the chief minister in Safavid and Qajar Iran and in Ottoman Turkey. As chief of the “Outer Service” in the Ottoman court structure, the sadr-i azam had overall responsible for all aspects of the Ottoman system beyond the palace. He chaired the imperial council (diwan), which consisted of other officials holding the rank of vizier and the title pasha.
