First Abbasid caliph (r. 750–54). Many factions participated in the Abbasid revolt against the Umayyads. Although al-Saffah's personal role in establishing the early Abbasid caliphate is ambiguous, his reign is known for its brutal suppression of opponents and its declaration of the descendants of Prophet Muhammad's uncle, Abbas, as the ruling faction of the revolution.
