Dutch painters, brothers, the best-known members of a family of artists. Cornelis, who worked mainly in Rotterdam, was highly versatile, his output including landscapes, portraits, religious and mythological subjects, peasant scenes in the tradition of Brouwer and Teniers, images of Hell, and allegorical and satirical pictures, sometimes with animals dressed as humans. Herman, who worked mainly in Utrecht, painted religious subjects but is best known for imaginary river views, done in a distinctive misty blue tonality (View on the Rhine, 1656, Dulwich Picture Gal.).
