A god from the heaven of the ‘Pure Abodes’ (suddhāvāsa). Sahampati appears on several occasions in the Pāli Canon, but his most famous intervention is shortly after the Buddha's awakening when the Buddha was hesitating about whether or not to preach the Dharma. Sahampati appeared and pleaded with him to do so in order that those ‘with just a little dust before their eyes’ might achieve salvation.
