Prominent philanthropist and dignitary of Pakistan, tabib (physician) in the traditional Greco-Arabic (Yunani) medical system, and vice president of the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences. He was president of Hamdard Foundation Pakistan, a large business enterprise manufacturing herbal medicines and other natural products in innovative modern ways and running a chain of clinics. Founded Madinat al-Hikmah (City of Wisdom), which was conceived as providing a comprehensive educational network from primary school through university, with a high-level research institution and a grand library. Held a number of high government positions, including the governership of Pakistan's Sindh province. Murdered in Karachi.
