A Japanese space probe to Halley's Comet, launched in 1985 January; its name in Japanese means ‘pioneer’, and it was Japan's first interplanetary spacecraft. Sakigake passed 7 million km from the sunward side of the comet's nucleus in 1986 March. See also suisei.
