The amount of inorganic salts dissolved in water, i.e. the number of grams per kilogram of water. Generally given as parts per thousand (per mille, ‰). Although it varies to a certain extent, the average salinity of sea-water is 34.7 parts per thousand. See also thermohaline circulation.
