The replenishment of salts (especially sodium salts) lost from the body. If they are not replaced there is a risk of suffering from a number of disorders, including cramps. Salt replacement is mainly achieved from the diet. Sports men and sports women rarely need to take salt tablets. Sports drinks sometimes contain salts, but their main value is to accelerate the uptake of water from the small intestine. See also water replacement.
