An embroidered panel on which various types of stitches have been worked, originally to demonstrate the skills of young embroidresses. The earliest surviving examples date from the second quarter of the 17th century. From the early 18th century onwards samplers were also made by children, often bearing their names, date of completion, the letters of the alphabet, and a pious text.
