After suffering considerable losses at the battle of Lincoln (May 1217), Prince Louis of France sent home for further reinforcements in his bid to become king of England. King Henry III's regency council realized that it was imperative to prevent these troops landing and a great sea‐battle took place off Sandwich on 24 August 1217. It was a decisive engagement, ending Louis's hopes in England.
