San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

(SFMOMA)

The largest collection of 20th-century art in the USA apart from the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The museum was founded in 1935 and was originally called the San Francisco Museum of Art (the change to its present name—recognizing the fact that its collections were devoted almost entirely to the 20th century—was made in 1975). It has had various changes of home, and in 1995 it moved to a spectacular new building designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta. The museum is particularly strong in American art, but it also has good representations of other schools.

Subjects: Art.
