Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

One of the Six Sectarian Teachers contemporary with the Buddha. Sañjaya is satirized in Buddhist accounts as a sceptic who would offer no firm opinion on any matter. His beliefs are similar to another group known as ‘eel-wrigglers’ (amarāvikkhepika) mentioned in the early sources. It appears that Sañjaya was formerly the teacher of Śāriputra and Mahāmaudgalyāyana before they abandoned him and followed the Buddha.

Subjects: Buddhism.
