British dancer. He studied at the Royal Ballet School and joined the company in 1982 where he was promoted principal (1987). A lyrical dancer with a classical purity of line, he was compared to Dowell and danced several of the latter's roles in The Dream and Manon, among others. He also danced the standard classic roles and his created roles included Bintley's Galanteries (1986) and Cyrano (1991), MacMillan's Prince of the Pagodas (1989), A. Page's Pursuit (1987), and Tuckett's Turn of the Screw (1999). He retired from the stage in 2002 and in 2005 was appointed director of the Central School of Ballet, then in 2009 ballet master and assistant director at San Francisco Ballet.
