Originally the Aztec name for any soft sweet fruit. Black sapote is the fruit of Diospyros digyna, a Central American persimmon, also known as chocolate fruit or black persimmon; it has a chocolate flavour when ripe, but is bitter when unripe. Mamey sapote is the fruit of Pouteria sapota, which is unrelated to the mamey apple. White sapote is the fruit of Casimiroa edulis, shaped like a persimmon, with creamy white flesh and a custard-like flavour. See also abiu; canistel; sapodilla; star apple.
