In Scotland copies of legal transactions involving the ownership of hereditable property are registered in one of the registers of sasines. The Secretary's Register of 1599–1609 was the forerunner of the system inaugurated in 1617. Registers of sasines for royal burghs were kept from 1681. The registers are kept in The National Archives of Scotland. Indexes up to 1780 have been published for most parts of Scotland. The registers are easier to search after 1780. Details are given in Cecil Sinclair, Tracing Your Scottish Ancestors (2003).
