Ridges of ice particles lying across an ice sheet, formed by strong winds, and oriented at right angles to them. The sastrugi alter the surface roughness, and this alters the resistance to wind. Consequently, more drift snow builds up; this self-enhancing process thus forms larger sastrugi (Herzfeld et al. (2003) Hydrol. Procs 17, 3).
