Quick Reference

The cell density at which further proliferation ceases under particular in vitro culture conditions. An important factor for some cells may be the availability of free substratum on which to spread (see density dependent inhibition of growth) in order to be able to absorb sufficient growth factor (or limiting nutrient) from the medium. Transformed cells generally achieve higher saturation densities than normal cells but even so far lower than those found in vivo.
