In the Ṛg Veda, a name of the Sun god. He is sometimes treated as identical with Sūrya, and sometimes differentiated from him, representing the latter's divine, vivifying power. The term may also be used of the sun between setting and rising, as opposed to ‘Sūrya’, which denotes it in the daytime. See also Sāvitrī mantra.
