A highly popular exemplar of the ideal pativratā, the devoted wife. Her story occurs in the Āraṇyakaparvan of the Mahābharata, in a section known as the Pativratāmāhatmya (‘The Glorification of the Faithful Wife’). Through her devotion and courage, her knowledge of dharma, and the strength of her tapas, Sāvitrī acquires the power to overcome Yama (Death), and restore her husband, Satyavat, to life.
