King of Saudi Arabia during the seizure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Shii uprising in Eastern Province in 1979. Ordered a controversial military assault on the mosque to liberate it, violating the mosque's role as sanctuary and earning opposition and criticism of other Muslim leaders. Was accused of impiety and innovation due to his modernization projects within the kingdom.
