Quick Reference

A common model for the organization of a metaphase chromosome that postulates a nonhistone core (scaffold) composed of structural maintenance of chromosomes 2 (SMC2) protein and topoisomerase II to which radial loops of DNA are attached at regular intervals. The model remains somewhat controversial and there are some inconsistencies, notably that nucleases but not proteases rapidly reduce the tension resistance of the chromosome to zero.
