Schechter function

Quick Reference

A mathematical expression that represents the luminosity function of galaxies. The function correctly reflects the facts that the luminosity function (the number-density of galaxies as function of luminosity) decreases with increasing luminosity and that the decrease is particularly marked at high luminosities. It is named after the American astronomer Paul Leonard Schechter (1948– ), who proposed it in 1976.
