classical philologist and patristic scholar. He held a succession of professorships in Germany. His main work, the Acta Conciliorum Oecumenicorum (1914–40), was a grandly planned edition of the Greek Councils; it provided, for the first time, a critical edition of the ‘Acts’ of Ephesus (431) and Chalcedon (451). His collection of papers on St Athanasius (1904–11) was also important.
