US astronaut. He was the lunar module pilot aboard the Apollo 9 flight, a ten-day Earth orbit in March 1969 to test Apollo's lunar-landing hardware. During the mission, he also undertook a 46-minute space walk to test the new Apollo spacesuit. Schweickart was selected as an astronaut in 1963 and left NASA in 1979.
