Ger. composer. Worked in cabaret in Munich 1931–2, cond. opera in Heidelberg 1932–3, Darmstadt 1933–4. Later comp. for films and tv and ran publishing business. Wrote 2 operas and an operetta, but best known for song Lili Marleen (1938), words by Hans Leip (1894–1983), which was taken up during the Second World War by Ger. and Allied soldiers and sung by, among others, Marlene Dietrich, Ann Shelton, and Vera Lynn.
