A NASA category of astronaut with an academic background in science or medicine. A scientist-astronaut is required to have a doctorate in science, engineering, or medicine. As with all astronauts, they must demonstrate excellent physical and psychological capabilities. All receive training as jet pilots in preparation for some of the features of space travel. The first six scientist-astronauts were chosen in 1965.
