US astronaut. He was pilot of the Challenger space shuttle flight in April 1984 that deployed the Long-Duration Exposure Facility. He was killed with his six fellow crew members in January 1986 aboard the Challenger flight that exploded soon after its launch. Scobee was selected as an astronaut in 1978.
