Quick Reference

In the 17th century Lowland Scots pedlars hawked cheap linen in many parts of England. Local authorities occasionally attempted to restrict the activities of such ‘Scotchmen’. In time, the name was applied to any pedlar who specialized in linen, regardless of whether or not he originated from north of the border.
