Anciently a Latin name for Ireland. After Q-Celtic Gaelic Gaels invaded Argyll and, centuries later, merged with the Picts to form a single kingdom, it became an honorific Latin name for Scotland. Also found in the Lebor Gabála [Book of Invasions] as a variant of Scota (1).
