(1920 –89), was born and brought up in Aberdeen, and attended that city's university, his studies interrupted from 1941 to 1945 by war service with the Gordon Highlanders. He was awarded the MC. Subsequently Scott taught at Edinburgh for a year, but spent most of his life at the University of Glasgow, where for many years he headed the department of Scottish literature.
