US astronaut. He made three space flights including the Apollo 15 mission to the Moon launched in July 1971, which he commanded. He and James Irwin landed on the lunar surface and were the first to use the lunar roving vehicle. Scott was selected as an astronaut in 1963. He was director of NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center 1975–7, and retired from NASA in 1977.
