A structurally fixed lateral curvature of the spine (>10°). Loci for susceptibility to idiopathic scoliosis have been mapped to chromosomes 19, 17, 8, and 9 and it may also occur as a secondary feature in other disorders including Marfan's syndrome, dysautonomia, neurofibromatosis, Friedreich's ataxia, and muscular dystrophies.
