Antiquarian societies began with the Spalding Club, Aberdeen (1841), and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, founded in Edinburgh by 1868. The major societies for the publication of historical texts are the Scottish Burgh Records Society (1868), the Scottish Text Society (1884), the Scottish History Society (1887), and the Scottish Record Society (1897).
