Quick Reference

A thin sheet of material consisting of fluorescent phosphor (usually rare earth phosphors), embedded in a plastic matrix which absorb the x-ray photons and convert the energy of the x-ray photon to light. One x-ray photon produces many light photons, thus decreasing the amount of x-rays required to produce an image and thereby reducing the dose to the patient. It is used in extra-oral radiography but not for digital imaging.

Subjects: Dentistry.
